Q. I want to reduce my carbon footprint. Does installing a Solar system really help?

There has never been a better time to take stock of how our energy consumption is affecting our environment, and we passionately believe that installing a solar system is a genuinely impactful way to reduce your carbon footprint.

Solar has an excellent cost v. benefit ratio. In our opinion it is vital to weigh up the benefits of any ‘Green’ products before purchasing, and we believe that solar wins on every front.

Q. What are the financial benefits? I’ve heard that the feed-in tariffs no longer exist.

Now is a great time to invest in solar, as the equipment has never been cheaper and good quality, efficient systems are readily available at a good price. The government Feed-In Tariff has now come to an end but with strategic power consumption, energy diversion and the Smart Export Guarantee (paying you for any exported energy) there are still ways to speed up the payback of the PV system. Any future rise in the cost of electricity increases the value of your PV installation and the return on investment

Q. What is the difference between Solar PV and Solar Thermal?

Both are a type of panel installed on your roof (domestic properties) or as an array on the ground (commercial installations).

Solar PV (Photovoltaic) panels on your roof convert light from the sun into electricity, usable throughout your home or business to power just about everything.

Solar Thermal panels collect heat from the sun which is then transferred into your home or business heating system as hot water or space heating.

Q. Does my roof pitch need to face a certain direction?

We can work with any roof aspects between South, East and West. Most roofs have at least one pitch facing this way, and we’re happy to come and look to advise you of the best positioning.

Q. Do I need planning permission to install solar?

In most cases, no, but you may require planning permission for ground mounted arrays or if your home is listed, or in a conservation area. If you are unsure, check with the Gov.uk planning portal.

Q. What happens to my electricity if there is a power cut?

Each solar PV installation includes an inverter, which takes the power coming in from the PV panels (DC) and converts it to grid quality power (AC) to use in your home or business. In case of a power cut, these inverters switch off automatically for safety reasons. There are battery storage and back-up options available to help see you through until the power is back on.

Q. Where does this inverter live?

Most domestic inverters are only slightly bigger than a standard electricity panel, and we will work with you to chose the best ventilated, most convenient location in your home. We only ever install good quality inverters from reputable manufacturers including Solar Edge, Fronius and SMA.

We never install inverters in loft spaces.

Q. What if it’s not sunny?

It doesn’t have to be. Even in the Cornish mizzle, there is still light. Although output is reduced, Solar PV panels generate electricity even in cloudy conditions.
